ITINERARY

The Jewish community in India was comprised of three distinct groups: Bene Israel, The Malabar Jewish community and the Iraqi Jews. Their history dates back to over 2000 years ago where there is evidence listed on the cemeteries in Hebrew. Today the community has shrunk considerably; however, there is a large community still active to share the history with us.

Knesseth Eliahoo Synagogue

Also known as Fort Jewish Synagogue, the Knesseth Eliahoo Synagogue was established in 1884 by Mr. Jacob Sasson in memory of his father. It was designed by the British architectural firm Gostling & Morris of Bombay. The building’s base is of stone masonry while the superstructure is of brick masonry. The external frontage of the synagogue is painted turquoise.

The inner space contains ornamented pillars. The sanctuary faces west towards Jerusalem. The bimah (reader’s platform) is bordered on both sides by ornately carved marble, over which is placed a tall, stained-glass arch that reaches the ceiling. Women worshippers sit in an upstairs gallery. The synagogue contains a number of Torah scrolls, along with silver-cased sefarim (religious books) belonging to the Sassoon family. On the ground floor, there are meeting and school rooms, and a mikveh (immersion pool).

Magen David Synagogue

Magen David Synagogue was built in 1861 by David Sassoon. It is a tall one-storied building in the style of Victorian architecture. Its gothic character with frontal pillars and clock tower is noteworthy. It has a beautiful tebah (reader’s platform that marks the center of Sefardic synagogues) and hekhal (ark which holds Torahs in cases of hammered silver). Regular worship services are conducted. David Sassoon built an elementary school near the synagogue which is now the Sir Jacob Sassoon Free High School. The synagogue runs under the Sir Jacob Sassoon Charity Trust.

The huge building is a heritage point. It is located in the premises of Jewish school. Prayer services are held every morning, for shabat and every Jewish festival. The synagogue is open from 9 to 9 in evening.

Tiphereth Israel Synagogue

This is one of the oldest synagogues in Mumbai. It was started in 1886 in a rented building by the Bene Israel community of Mumbai and is now located at Rosh-Del-Villa in Jacob Circle. Tiphereth Israel Synagogue was formally known as Jacob Circle Prayer Hall. It is also called Kandlekaranchi Mashid. Sabbath worships are conducted with community hall, place where religious studies are done and various activities are held.

Gate of Mercy Synagogue

Gate of Mercy Synagogue or Juni Masjid was established in 1796. The street on which the Synagogue stands was named Samaji Street in His Honor and is at present known as Samuel Street. The Synagogue celebrated its centenary in the year 1896 and then renamed Shaar-Ha-Rahamim.
