ITINERARY
Guided tour of Mumbai
Mumbai is the commercial capital of India, and a fast paced, cosmopolitan city.
You will be driven through the city to see the most important buildings, monuments, streets, beaches, … Your guide will provide commentary throughout the tour and arrange for photo stops where possible depending on traffic conditions.
You will see the old colonial buildings like Victoria Terminus (undoubtedly the British Raj’s piece de resistance, featuring carved stone friezes, stained glass windows and flying buttresses), Mumbai University and Rajabai Clock Tower.
The tour will take you through Marine Drive, South Mumbai’s windswept promenade, flanked by the sea and a row of art deco buildings, and on to Chowpaty Beach, the Parsi Towers of Silence and Malabar Hill.
Gateway of India (guided visit)
The Gateway of India is an arch monument built during the 20th century in Bombay, India. The monument was erected to commemorate the landing of King George V and Queen Mary at Apollo Bunder on their visit to India in 1911.
Built in Indo-Saracenic style, the foundation stone for the Gateway of India was laid on 31 March 1911. The structure is an arch made of basalt, 26 metres (85 feet) high. The final design of George Wittet was sanctioned in 1914 and the construction of the monument was completed in 1924. The Gateway was later used as a symbolic ceremonial entrance to India for Viceroys and the new Governors of Bombay. It served to allow entry and access to India.
The Gateway of India is located on the waterfront at Apollo Bunder area at the end of Chhatrapati Shivaji Marg in South Mumbai and overlooks the Arabian Sea. The monument has also been referred to as the Taj Mahal of Mumbai, and is the city’s top tourist attraction.
Prince of Wales Museum
This Gothic and Moorish style building is crowned by a sparkling white dome, and houses a priceless collection of art, sculpture, china and other antiques.
Lunch in a typical Bombay restaurant
You will enjoy typical local food with spices to suite your taste.
Dhobi Ghat (guided visit)
Built during the British Raj in 1890, Dhobi Ghat is the world’s largest outdoor laundry and a very popular attraction among foreign tourists. The word Dhobi Ghat is used all over India to refer to any place where many washers are present.
There are rows of open-air concrete wash pens, each fitted with its own flogging stone. Washers, known as dhobis, work in the open to clean clothes and linens from Mumbai’s hotels and hospitals.
Mani Bhavan (guided visit)
This is the old Mumbai residence of Mahatma Gandhi. It’s a pretty, two-storied structure that now houses a reference library with over 2000 books, a photo exhibition of the Mahatma’s life, and well-preserved memorabilia, including an old charkha or spinning wheel that Gandhi used to use. Mani Bhavan was Gandhi’s Mumbai headquarters for about 17 years, from 1917 to 1934.
In 1955, the building was taken over by the Gandhi Smarak Nidhi in order to maintain it as a memorial to Gandhi.
Once you enter the place, there is a library with statue of the Mahatma where people offer tributes. Then a staircase dotted with Gandhi’s pictures depicting his life leads visitors to the first floor which has photo gallery with photographs from his childhood till his assassination, along with press clippings. The room that Gandhi used during his stay there is on the second floor, where through a glass partition people can see two of his spinning wheels, a book and his bed on the floor. Right opposite that room is a hall where photographs and paintings of his lifetime are on display. And finally one reaches the terrace, where he was arrested in 1932.
Chor Bazaar (guided visit)
This is one of the largest flea markets in India. The word chor means thief . The market is thought to have originally been called Shor Bazaar, meaning noisy market. Eventually however, stolen goods started to find their way into the market, resulting in its new name. It is said that if you lose anything in Mumbai you can buy it back from the “Chor Bazaar”!
A popular story about the origin of the name of the market is that a violin and some other belongings of Queen Victoria went missing when being unloaded from her ship while on a visit to Bombay, and were later found for sale in the “thieves’ market”.
In spite of this reputation, Chor Bazaar sells mostly second-hand goods. The market is now famous for antique and vintage items. A store called Mini Market offers old Bollywood posters for sale. Others offer authentic Victorian furniture, replacement parts for automobiles, etc. Although bargains are sometimes staggering, haggling is considered mandatory. This is basically an “organised” flea market, where one has to rummage through junk to find what one wants.
